Pine needles may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to herbal medicine, but these aromatic evergreens have surprising healing properties. This homemade pine needle cough syrup is easy to make and can help calm coughs, relieve chest congestion, and soothe sore or dry throats.

Medicinal Benefits of Pine Needles

The needles of most pine species are rich in antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory compounds. They also contain high levels of vitamin C, which supports the immune system and helps the body fight infections.

Pine needles act as a natural expectorant, helping to loosen mucus and clear the respiratory tract. When steeped in hot water and combined with raw honey, they make a soothing syrup that is both effective and pleasant to taste.

Which Pine Needles Are Safe to Use

Most pine and conifer trees are safe to use for teas and syrups, but proper identification is essential.

Safe choices include:

  • Pine (most species)
  • Spruce
  • Fir
  • Hemlock (the tree, not the toxic herbaceous plant)

Avoid:

  • Yew, which is toxic
  • Ponderosa pine, especially during pregnancy

Conifer needles can be foraged year-round, making this a simple and sustainable herbal remedy.
