For most people, Neosporin is the go-to remedy for cuts, scrapes, and minor skin injuries. It’s a popular antibacterial ointment that promises quick healing. But if you take a closer look at the ingredient list, you might think twice before applying it to your skin.

Neosporin contains Bacitracin Zinc, Neomycin Sulfate, Polymyxin B, and Pramoxine, all suspended in petroleum jelly. These synthetic ingredients can cause side effects such as allergic reactions, muscle twitching, skin rashes, convulsions, hearing loss, chest tightness, and even fetal harm.

And for all that, a one-ounce tube costs around $10.

Fortunately, nature provides powerful healing alternatives that are just as effective—without the risks. By using a few natural ingredients, you can make your own safe, antibacterial ointment at home. This homemade salve not only helps wounds heal but also nourishes and protects the skin.

DIY Natural Antibiotic Ointment

Every ingredient in this recipe contributes unique healing properties. The base oils are antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. The herbs soothe, disinfect, and speed up tissue repair.

Beeswax protects the skin by forming a breathable barrier that locks in moisture and prevents infection, while witch hazel calms irritation and supports healing. Together, these ingredients create a natural, potent, and soothing ointment that rivals store-bought products.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup almond oil, avocado oil, or olive oil
  • ½ cup healing herbs of your choice (chamomile, calendula, comfrey, lavender, or plantain leaves)
  • 4 tablespoons beeswax
  • 2 teaspoons witch hazel
  • 15 drops lavender or tea tree essential oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the herbs in a glass jar and pour the oil over them until fully submerged.
  2. Set the jar in a saucepan filled halfway with water. Heat gently on low for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Strain the herbs using a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or clean cotton cloth.
  4. Return the strained oil to the jar or saucepan and add the beeswax.
  5. Stir until the beeswax melts completely, then remove from heat.
  6. Add the witch hazel and essential oils (if using), and mix well.
  7. Pour the finished ointment into a clean glass jar or tin and let it cool completely before sealing.

How to Use

Apply a thin layer to:

  • Scrapes and cuts
  • Minor burns

Store your ointment in a cool, dark place. It should stay fresh and effective for up to one year.
