Cracked heels are one of the most common foot problems and can range from a purely cosmetic concern to a painful condition. Deep cracks are often noticeable, the skin appears dry and thick, sometimes forming yellow or darkened calluses along the inner edge of the heel. Additional symptoms can include peeling skin, redness, itching, and inflammation.
If left untreated, these cracks may worsen, leading to pain, bleeding, and infection. Fortunately, with the right care, you can prevent further damage and restore smooth, healthy feet.
Causes of Cracked Heels
Cracked heels often result from:
- Dry skin and lack of moisture
- Harsh or dry air
- Poor diet or dehydration
- Inadequate foot care or ill-fitting shoes
- Aging and prolonged standing on hard surfaces
- Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, corns, or calluses
- Medical issues such as diabetes or thyroid disorders
