Fermented rice water has been used for centuries in Asia as a natural hair rinse. When rice is soaked or cooked, nutrients like inositol are released into the water. Inositol is a naturally occurring sugar in our bodies that helps support cell structure, and it’s also found in grains and legumes. Fermented rice water carries additional proteins, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that promote a healthy scalp, strengthen hair, and enhance shine. You can also boost its benefits by infusing it with hair-loving herbs.
While nutrient-rich rice water is available in commercial hair care products, making your own is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and convenient—you can prepare it alongside your meals.
Rice Water vs. Fermented Rice Water
You can use plain rice water for a quick hair rinse, which still provides inositol, proteins, amino acids, and minerals. Fermenting the rice water, however, enhances its nutrient content, makes it gentler on hair, and helps nourish the scalp more effectively.

How to Make Rice Water for Hair
1. Soaking Method
Quick and easy, but unfermented rice water can be harsh for some hair types.

- 1 Tbsp organic herbal powder (optional)
Instructions:
- Rinse rice thoroughly and place in a quart-size bowl.

- Cover with 3 cups of clean water and soak for 30 minutes, pressing occasionally to release starch.
- Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve into a clean container.
- Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.
2. Boiling Method
Double-duty: makes rice for meals and rice water for hair.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup uncooked rice
- 2 cups water + more for rinsing
- 1 Tbsp dried culinary herbs (optional)
Instructions:
- Rinse rice and set aside.
- Bring 4 cups water to a boil. Add rice and herbs.
- Cover, reduce to simmer, and cook until rice is tender (15–25 minutes).

3. Fermented Rice Water
Fermentation enhances nutrient content and softens hair.
Instructions:
- Use rice water from either method.
- Cover and leave on the counter up to 24 hours. A slightly sour smell indicates fermentation.
- Strain and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Use within 48 hours for best results.
How to Use Rice Water as a Hair Rinse
- Wash and condition hair as usual.
- Pour rice water onto wet hair, ensuring all layers are saturated.
- Massage into scalp and hair.
- Leave on for 5–20 minutes (avoid longer to prevent dryness or irritation).
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Towel dry or air dry.
Considerations & Cautions
Which Rice to Use:
Choose rice with the highest nutrient content. Whole grains like brown, black, or wild rice are ideal. Avoid rice from areas with high arsenic or heavy metals.
For Dry Hair:
High protein content may overload dry hair. Use fermented rice water in moderation.
Low Porosity Hair:
Hair may take longer to absorb rice water. Start with small amounts and avoid overuse to prevent tangling or frizz.
Rice water is an easy, natural way to nourish your hair, boost shine, and strengthen your scalp. Experiment with different herbs and rice varieties to find the perfect combination for your hair type.
