Understanding Psoriasis
Psoriasis [pronounced sore-EYE-ah-sis] is a chronic, recurring inflammatory skin condition. Unlike eczema or dermatitis, it is characterized by red, dry, scaly patches with clearly defined borders. Pain, itching, and discomfort often accompany the lesions.
Psoriasis can appear in multiple forms:
- Plaque psoriasis: Raised red patches with silvery scales, usually on elbows, knees, scalp, and back.
- Inverse psoriasis: Found in skin folds, smooth, shiny, and intensely red.
- Erythrodermic psoriasis: Widespread red, scaly skin that impairs the skin’s protective function.
- Pustular psoriasis: Pus-filled lesions on hands, feet, or scattered across the body.
Causes of Psoriasis
Psoriasis occurs due to rapid skin cell growth, often linked to immune system dysfunction and toxin overload. Contributing factors include:
- Excess stress
- High levels of copper or keratin
- Poor protein digestion
- Bowel toxicity and liver dysfunction
- Sugar, alcohol, tobacco, processed foods, and animal fats
Proteins that regulate skin growth may be missing or misfolded, leading to improper shedding and rapid skin cell accumulation. Research shows sulforaphane can support proper protein folding and improve skin cell regulation.
Diet & Lifestyle Recommendations
Psoriasis can improve with proper detoxification, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments:
- Perform a complete gastrointestinal cleanse to remove toxins and support healing.
- Limit sugar, processed foods, dairy, and animal fats. These contain arachidonic acid, which can worsen psoriasis.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
- Increase intake of cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut) or fish oil capsules to help reduce inflammation and itching.
- Reduce omega-6 oils (corn, sunflower, safflower) and replace with omega-3s, especially flaxseed oil (2–3 tbsp daily).
- Supplement with B vitamins, vitamin D, and high-quality probiotics.
- Avoid gluten-containing foods to reduce flare-ups.
Green Juice for Psoriasis
Alkalizing green juices help detoxify the body, hydrate cells, and support skin healing. Drink 2–3 glasses daily and plenty of water.
Suggested ingredients for juices:
- Celery, cucumber, fennel, watercress
- Kale, spinach, beetroot, radish
- Wheatgrass, cilantro, ginger root, lemongrass
- Chayote, coconut, guava, apple
Example combinations for one serving:
- 2 green apples + 6 celery ribs + 8–10 kale leaves + ¼ lemon
- 2 green apples + 1 fennel + a bunch of watercress + ¼ lemon
- 1 cucumber + 1 beetroot + ¼ lemon + thumb-sized ginger root
- 1 cucumber + 6 celery ribs + 4–6 radish + ¼ lemon
- Fresh coconut water
- 1 oz wheatgrass juice + a squeeze of lemon
- Lemongrass-ginger tea
Extra Tip: Rub a slice of potato on itchy patches or take a salt bath 2–3 times per week to soothe the skin.
By combining dietary changes, detoxification, and natural remedies, psoriasis symptoms can improve dramatically, helping your skin heal from the inside out.
